The Russian – Ukrainian crisis is an ongoing military confrontation and international crisis between Russia and Ukraine that started in March 2021 and escalated in late 2021, when NATO denied the Kremlin “guarantees of Ukraine’s non-accession”.

The crisis has caused international tension, also involving NATO, the United States, and the European Union. The crisis has been described by commentators as one of the most intense since the Cold War, characterized by a massive buildup of Russian military forces on the Ukrainian border.

Russia declares war on Ukraine, explosions in Kyiv, Mariupol, Kharkiv, Odessa, Lvov / Debka, February 24, 2022

Vladimir Putin early Thursday, Feb. 24, announced a special military operation in the Donbas “to demilitarize” the region, amid unconfirmed reports of a huge seaborne landing in the Black Sea port of Odessa. Explosions were heard in Kyiv, Mariupol, Odessa, Lvov and Kharkiv.

In an early morning address, Putin said the “special military operation” he had launched comes in response to threats coming from Ukraine. He added that Russia doesn’t have a goal to occupy the country. Putin said responsibility for bloodshed “lies with the Ukrainian “regime.” He insisted that the operation was targeting military installations and avoiding populated areas. Putin told Ukrainian service members to “lay down their arms and go home.”

The Russia’s defense ministry also denied attacking Ukrainian cities – saying it is targeting military infrastructure, air defense and air forces with “high-precision weapons.” Explosions nonetheless ripped through Kyiv, the capital, Mariupol and Kharkiv.

Unconfirmed reports said that Russian forces had destroyed or rendered unusable the Ukrainian navy and taken control of Boryspil Airport in Kiev. Other reports spoke of a huge seaborne landing in Odessa involving large landing craft and helicopters shortly after dawn. Ukraine’s access to the Black Sea and Azov Sea was cut off.

Ukraine was on Wednesday placed on a war footing and a state of emergency declared; 200,000 military reservists called up; border areas restricted and citizens given right to arm themselves.

Announcing this in an address to the nation, Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky spoke from his personal mobile phone. This is taken to indicate either that he has left Kyiv and may be on his way to a safe place offered him by the |Americans, or that he is cut off from access to national TV and radio studios.

According to the latest updates on Thursday, Russian forces are also pushing into Ukraine from Belarus and advancing westward. Local reporters add that the town of Lvov is under missile attack. The Russian military announced, “The military infrastructure of Ukrainian military air bases has been put out of action. The air defenses of the armed forces of Ukraine have been neutralized.”

US embassy families to leave Ukraine as Russia boosts border forces with Iskander-M missiles / Debka, January 22, 2022

Underlining war fears, the State Department on Saturday, Jan. 22, directed US diplomats’ families to evacuate Ukraine on Monday as Russia augmented its border strength to 175,000 troops. American civilians are to be advised to leave on commercial flights next week.

Stoking war tensions, Western intelligence sources reported sighting the transfer of an Iskander-M brigade from the Russian army’s tactical nuclear facilities to the Ukraine. They are speculating that this weapon is meant to serve as a first strike if Russia goes through with an invasion. This missile, which has a range of 500km, carries 500kg of explosives, but its warhead is also nuclear-capable. If fired in the Ukraine conflict, it would mark the first use ever of a tactical nuclear weapon in conditions of war.

The Russians have moreover equipped the Iskander brigade with extra P78-19 transporter-erector-launchers based on an 8×8 MZKT-79306 truck chassis, effectively quadrupling the brigade’s capacity. By launching their offensive with these missiles, the Russians would hope to save their air force bombers from being hit by Ukrainian air defense batteries.

The Russian army is additionally said poised to launch Kalibr cruise missiles from warships and submarines in the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. These missiles, whose range is 2,400km, were used by the Russian army in the Syrian conflict.

The evacuation order for US embassy families came hours after the delivery to Kyev of the first shipment of a $200 million US military package. The Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania promised to send US-made anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine.

Russia’s Landing Ships Are Headed To The Mediterranean To Join A Growing Armada (Updated)

The Russian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that six amphibious warfare ships that left the Baltic Sea this week are heading to the Mediterranean Sea, where they say these vessels will take part in naval exercises. From the Mediterranean, this amphibious flotilla could potentially swing north into the Black Sea. There has already been significant discussion among experts and observers about whether this might be the actual final destination of these ships, which would put them in a position to support a possible new large-scale Russian intervention into Ukraine.

Nearly 50 Percent Chance of ‘Major War’ Over Russia-Ukraine: Ex Ambassador / Newsweek, January 17, 2022

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bill Taylor says he believes there is nearly a “50 percent” chance of a “major war” breaking out in Europe, as fears grow that Russian President Vladimir Putin is prepared to invade Ukraine.

“There’s a 50 percent chance that there will be a major war in Europe today, with tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides, both sides, dying,” Taylor told CNN on Sunday, referring to the burgeoning crisis that has emerged on Ukraine’s eastern border.

“A nearly 50 percent chance of that kind of outcome is troubling, is very troubling,” he continued.

“The reason, if there is reason, if Mr. Putin is thinking about the cost and benefits, he won’t do it,” Taylor added. “Because the costs are are very, very high. The cost in soldier’s lives, the cost in civilian lives. The cost in sanctions that he knows are coming.”

Taylor’s remarks come as White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the Biden administration is concerned the Kremlin “is preparing for an invasion into Ukraine that may result in widespread human rights violations and war crimes should diplomacy fail to meet their objectives.”

“As part of its plans, Russia is laying the groundwork to have the option of fabricating a pretext for invasion, including through sabotage activities and information operations, by accusing Ukraine of preparing an imminent attack against Russian forces in eastern Ukraine,” Psaki said.

The Russian military “plans to begin these activities several weeks before a military invasion, which could begin between mid-January and mid-February,” she said.

“If they decide they want to engage in diplomatic conversations and talks, we are very open to that and we’re hopeful they will do that. But ultimately, it’s a choice they need to make,” Psaki said.

Taylor, who departed his post in January 2020, told CNN he believes Putin has an “obsession” with Ukraine.

“He wants to be sure Ukraine doesn’t join NATO,” Taylor explained. “Ukraine has every right to apply to NATO, Ukraine’s a sovereign country. Mr. Putin doesn’t agree with that. Mr. Putin thinks that Ukraine is not a sovereign country…he thinks Ukraine and is really just part of Russia.”

Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby has said that the US will “continue to provide security assistance to Ukraine” in the event of an invasion “to help them better defend themselves.”

Russia has so far amassed more than 100,000 troops at Ukraine’s border.

If Russia invades Ukraine, what happens next? The Washington Post, January 22, 2022

In the event of a Russian incursion into Ukraine, what happens next? One report suggests the Biden administration would consider making Ukraine ungovernable by supporting and supplying arms to local resistance groups. Rather than using NATO forces to deter a Russian attack or openly allying with the Ukrainian government, the United States might support an indigenous resistance if Russia invades Ukraine.

If the Biden administration did that, it would appear to be setting the stage for a repeat of U.S. support for another insurgency — one that led to the denouement of the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Both Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chair of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark A. Milley have warned their Russian counterparts that any incursion would be followed by an insurgency. But it’s a policy with significant cost, and a move likely to leave a shattered country in its wake.

Russia’s strategy involves indirect rule

My research on indirect rule suggests Russia is unlikely to formally incorporate Ukraine (or any other former satellite) into some new version of the Soviet empire. Although the port and naval facilities in the Crimea might have been worth seizing, the rest of the Ukraine is more symbolic than essential to Russia’s security and economy.

Why would Putin invade Ukraine?

Rather than risk international opprobrium for terminating the sovereignty of a recognized member of the international community, Moscow is more likely to try to subvert the current government of President Volodymyr Zelensky and rule indirectly through a pro-Russian Ukrainian proxy, much as happened under another Ukrainian leader, Viktor Yanukovych. To the extent that Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to block NATO’s expansion further to the east, this approach ensures pro-Russian leaders in the target countries would rebuff any Western invitations.

Russia’s strategy is a classic one of building spheres of influence through indirect rule. Though his motives are intentionally obscured, Putin is most likely seeking client regimes dependent on Russia — and willing to follow the Kremlin’s lead on foreign policy.

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, turn your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. Prophesy against him and say: This is what the Lord God says: Look, I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws, and bring you out with all your army, including horses and riders, who are all splendidly dressed, a huge company armed with shields and bucklers, all of them brandishing swords. (Ezekiel 38:1-4)

Bible scholars have long identified Gog as the leader of Russia, and the land of Magog as Russia.

The invasion of Israel will be primarily motivated by greed for their great wealth. The recent annexation of Crimea will be their strategy. The Crimean Peninsula was invaded and annexed by the Russian Federation in 2014. They used the excuse of the Ukrainian revolution, and Russian masked troops occupied key Crimean locations, including airports and military bases, following Putin’s orders.

To understand why Russia would invade the Middle East, it is critical to understand Putin, the “President for Life”:

He came to believe that he had been chosen for a special mission—to save Russia. This more than anything inspired the events of 2014, when he decided to annex the Crimean peninsula in response to a revolution in Ukraine that he believed to be part of a global anti-Russia conspiracy. The Western world reacted with dismay, and the U.S. and Europe imposed steep sanctions on Russia. But for many Russians the annexation of Crimea signified that Russia, for the first time after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, was once again a real superpower.

Ever since, making Russia great again has become a new ideology for Putin.

You don’t have to look far to find evidence of what Putin will do with his next term in power. Two weeks before the presidential elections, he spoke about a new generation of Russian nuclear missiles that can overcome any kind of defense.

Ignoring tradition, the president made his address from the gigantic Moscow Manege conference center rather than the Kremlin so that Putin could proudly show his video presentation—an illustration with missiles flying toward the U.S.—to applause from Russian officials.

It was hailed around the world as a return to the Cold War, which was exactly Putin’s intention. Russia can’t pretend to be an economic superpower, but it has another asset: nuclear weapons. Putin believes there is no other way to make the West respect Russia.

Putin’s presidency invoked positive images of the USSR, returning to the former greatness of Russia, which led to a renewed respect for strong state power. Everything was put into the order – even oligarchs were subordinated to the president, and only those who express absolute loyalty to him maintained their status. The majority of Russians are inspired by Putin’s foreign policy. In 2014 he annexed Crimea and was termed as a “Gatherer of Russian Land” like Peter the Great. Military actions in Ukraine and Syria and the increasing hostility with the West also increased his popularity.

Putin became not simply a leader but a brand. Supporting the definition of Putin’s regime as a form of distilled or hybrid authoritarianism. Therefore it can be defined as a commercialized Soviet regime that has replaced Marxism-Leninism with an eclectic ideology centered on the idea of resurgent great-power status, combining neo-imperialism with state capitalism. In addition to this, there is the “cult of personality” – the inherent component of the Soviet political system – which in part was revitalized in Putin’s Russia.

The prosperity of Israel’s advanced economy allows the country to have a sophisticated welfare state, a modern infrastructure, and a high-technology sector competitively on par with Silicon Valley.

Relatively poor in natural resources, Israel depends on imports of petroleum, raw materials, wheat, motor vehicles, uncut diamonds and production inputs, though the country’s nearly total reliance on energy imports may change in the future with recent discoveries of natural gas reserves off its coast:

The largest reserve of natural gas, over 16 trillion cubic feet, has been discovered off the coast of Israel, and is estimated to be worth more than $95 billion, U.S. company Noble Energy Inc. announced on Wednesday.

The reserve, Leviathon, is the largest amount of natural gas discovered in the world in the last decade and is located in approximately 5,400 feet (1,645 meters) of water, about 130 kilometers offshore of Haifa and 29 miles (47 kilometers) southwest of the Tamar discovery.

Last year, Israeli company Isramco announced that reserves of natural gas have been discovered at its Tamar 1 offshore drill site 90 kilometers west of Haifa, making it the largest ever discovered in Israel until now – three times bigger than that of the “Yam Thetis” consortium and worth $15 billion.

Noble Energy CEO Charles Davidson said, “Leviathan is the latest major discovery for Noble Energy and is easily the largest exploration discovery in our history.“

Leviathan natural gas platform on its way to Israel / Israel National News, July 14, 2019

The largest energy project in the history of the State of Israel is reaching its final stages of completion and remains on schedule to deliver first commercial gas sales to the Israel domestic market and regional markets before the end of the year.

In recent weeks the Leviathan partnership –comprised of Noble Energy, Delek Drilling and Ratio – completed the construction and testing of the production units (topsides) of the Leviathan Platform that will process natural gas from the reservoir and transport it to Israel’s national gas pipeline.

After connecting and assembling the topside units of the platform, Noble Energy will start a series of commissioning tests before initiating commercial gas flow to the domestic market before the end of 2019.

For the first time in history, Israel will also become a significant energy exporter when flow of Leviathan natural gas to Israel’s neighbors begins.

Is it likely that Putin will use a Middle East uprising as an excuse to invade Israel and try to annex it, just like he did with Crimea? Is this Gog’s plan – to make Russia great again?

Greed is a strong and selfish desire to have more of something, most often money or power. There are many warnings in the Bible about giving in to greed and longing for riches.

Greed and a desire for riches are traps that bring ruin and destruction. “The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil,” and Christians are warned, “Do not put your trust in wealth” (see 1 Timothy 6:9-10, 17-18). Covetousness, or having an excessive or greedy desire for more, is idolatry. Ephesians 5:5 says, “For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person – such a man is an idolater – has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.”

Is this great battle already beginning? What are the facts on the ground? Following the data points in the news and Biblical prophecy leads to some earth shaking predictions. Consider this recent headline:

‘Significant buildup’ of Russian military forces in Crimea / Washington Examiner, June 12, 2019

Over the past 18 months, the Russian military has reportedly been expanding and building up its forces and infrastructure in Crimea.

A U.S. intelligence official told Defense One that Russia was conducting “a deliberate and systematic buildup of their forces on the peninsula.”

“The combat radius covers all Ukraine and beyond the Black Sea. It significantly increases their strike options, potentially extending to the Middle East,” the official said.

The United States has sent thousands of troops, an aircraft carrier, nuclear-capable B-52 bombers and advanced fighter jets to the Middle East, and fears are growing of a wider conflict after mysterious oil tanker attacks near the Strait of Hormuz blamed on Iran, attacks by Iranian-backed rebels in Yemen on Saudi Arabia and Iran’s downing of the US military drone.

What will be the result of this upcoming invasion?

Now on that day, the day when Gog comes against the land of Israel”—this is the declaration of the Lord God—“My wrath will flare up. I swear in My zeal and fiery rage: On that day there will be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. The fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the animals of the field, every creature that crawls on the ground, and every human being on the face of the earth will tremble before Me. The mountains will be thrown down, the cliffs will collapse, and every wall will fall to the ground. I will call for a sword against him on all My mountains”—the declaration of the Lord God—“and every man’s sword will be against his brother. I will execute judgment on him with plague and bloodshed. I will pour out torrential rain, hailstones, fire, and brimstone on him, as well as his troops and the many peoples who are with him. (Ezekiel 38: 17-22)

One of the critical signs pointing to the imminent Rapture of the Church is the invasion of Israel, which begins World War 3. This invasion was foretold in Ezekiel 38 – 39, and in Psalm 83:

God, do not keep silent.
Do not be deaf, God; do not be idle.
See how Your enemies make an uproar;
those who hate You have acted arrogantly.
They devise clever schemes against Your people;
they conspire against Your treasured ones.
They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation
so that Israel’s name will no longer be remembered.”
For they have conspired with one mind;
they form an alliance against You—
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
Moab and the Hagrites,
Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek,
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre.
Even Assyria has joined them;
they lend support to the sons of Lot. (Psalm 83:1-8)

What is amazing is that the Book of Ezekiel was written between 593 and 571 BC, and Psalm 38 was written around 1,000 BC. What other religious book has specific prophecies with specific nations, from thousands of years ago, that are manifesting now?

The historically miraculous rebirth of the Jewish state in 1948, after 2,000 years of nonexistence, and the conquering of East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967 and other factors seems to have set the stage for a time clock for the “last days” of Israel and the fulfillment of many remaining prophecies relevant to that period.

About the times and the seasons: Brothers, you do not need anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.

When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains come on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

But you, brothers, are not in the dark, for this day to overtake you like a thief. For you are all sons of light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness. So then, we must not sleep, like the rest, but we must stay awake and be serious. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, we must be serious and put the armor of faith and love on our chests, and put on a helmet of the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:1-11)

What will happen next? The Bible gives us the answer:

You nations, come here and listen;
you peoples, pay attention!
Let the earth hear, and all that fills it,
the world and all that comes from it.
The Lord is angry with all the nations—
furious with all their armies.
He will set them apart for destruction,
giving them over to slaughter.
Their slain will be thrown out,
and the stench of their corpses will rise;
the mountains will flow with their blood. (Isaiah 34:1-3)

Where does our hope come from?

On February 6, 1999 I was sitting on my bed praying and the Lord spoke to me in a loud voice.

He said, “Tell them that I love them. Tell them that I care. Tell them that I am coming for them. Prepare, like a man who has been told he has just a short time to live. Heal, forgive, and perform those acts of charity that you have been putting off. Tell everyone that I am coming soon for My bride.”

At this point, He said, “What do you see?” I looked down at the pattern on the bed. It was a pattern of budding flowers.

He said, “Open yourself up to praise Me…receive My love…stretch yourself out to Me”.  After that, He said: “My reward is with Me”.

Then I said: “Lord, give me a sign in the heavens or on the earth, so that they will know that this word is from You!” Then I saw a vision of an arm, up to the shoulder, with a gun in its hand. The gun fired two times. The arm was pointing downward. The Lord said: “There will be two shots fired that will be heard around the world. This is a sign, so they will believe that this word proceeded from My throne.”

After He left, I quickly wrote down what happened so that I would have a record of this message. I sent the message to many churches and ministries, but it was mostly ignored. I went on with my life.

In September of 2001, I saw the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York City. I knew then that the Lord confirmed His word. The Lord is coming very soon!

I have a bit unusual perspective, though I got my ideas from others. I think the Beast Empire will be European Civilization uniting East and West, including Russia and the US, and all of Europe. However, until that happens Russia and the US are like the thumbs on left and right hands, and they seek the sphere that enables them to be dominant in the roles they play.

Right now, Russia is decompressing from the fall of the Soviet Union, and trying to establish itself as a major player, having isolated itself during the Cold War. I expect that instead of taking on the entire world, Russia will have to concede a lot in order to become the powerful player it already is.

Russia is still able to rely on partner China to be the rogue operator on the world stage. As long as it has China as an ally, what is to prevent it from being adventurous, particularly since China itself operates freely as a bully on the world stage?

At some point, I think Russia will opt for European relations, instead of its alliance with China. And that becomes more feasible as Europe loses its Christian identity and becomes more socialist. That’s a sad state of affairs, and yet the reality, as I see it.

There is this great battle of Gog mentioned in the Bible. The one in Rev 20 appears to be the same player, but at a different time, after the Millennium, or at the end of it. This player is likely Russia, in my view.

So yes, there is this great battle coming to invade Israel. I’m just not sure if it will be with adventurous Russia that we now see, with China’s support, or in an alliance with Europe in the Antichristian alliance?

The Rapture is a sign-less event, meaning that there is nothing that needs to happen before the Rapture occurs. The Rapture is imminent. The invasion of Israel by Gog and Magog and the rest of the coalition (Ez 38-39) could happen before the Rapture or after the Rapture. As to whether it is world war III, I say no, as it is a regional war and will be over quite quickly once God Himself comes to Israel’s aid.

Just another somewhat dark thought and thing to watch for in the current crisis. While I tend to think of “military intelligence ” as an oxy moron, if the crisis isn’t just a show for the general population to distract from problems out of our control and get our focus on a “fake ” crisis aimed at legitimizing a restoration of territories under the dominion of “powers”, the most sound tactical plan for actual warfare, would be a withdrawal of defensive forces when the invading force is at full strength, and deployment of “tactical ” nukes to obliterate those invading forces, destroying entire armies and equipment.

In military thinking, this minimizes “collateral damage” to specific regions, but would likely lead to large scale retaliation. Consequently such a tactic would require a broader attack on the invaders military structure.

The military mind typically sees this as acceptable loss even when large civilian casualties are part of that loss. The goal of military tactics is to “win.” This is partly why “nuclear yields” have been greatly scaled back from our cold war weapons.

The older warheads assured mutual destruction because of their tremendous destructive force. Now it would take about 4 or 5 tactical nukes to turn the island of Manhattan into a sheet of glass, instead of just 1 (which would extend the damage outside the immediate environs of the city.)

Our modern arsenal is designed for use, not as a deterrent, but the sheer number of weapons held by the superpowers is still more than enough to leave the Earth a wasteland if fully deployed.

I’m reasonably sure that the “superpowers ” recognize this fact, but use the threat for geopolitical advantage, making “back room” deals to transfer power and authority, This is aligned with the notion that the heavenly host is involved in some manner with governing territories.

The thing is, even such powers can only maneuver people according to our unregenerate nature. They can not influence the Holy Spirit.

I really hope that the church recognizes this, but you don’t have to understand the root of the problem in order to address the visible portion of it through prayer. God knows even when we don’t.

The internet is a powerful tool that we can use to reach people with the Gospel. It can be used in so many ways to reach people all over the world, and it’s only getting better with each passing day! We reach millions effectively across cultures and demographics – without geographical boundaries!
